Leaving the lofty heights of the 5 Rivers Lookout we headed towards Derby, quickly checking the option of Gibb River Road, which was still closed due to flooding at Pentecost River crossing. The rest of the road was ok but as we were coming from the eastern end we had no choice but to go the long way via Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing, about 700 kms, 300kms more than Gibb River Rd
Initial plans was to stop at Halls Creek but after a quick look around the journey continued. Things were getting dark and the sunset was pretty good, just made spoting the wildlife a little hard. We seemed to be the only ones on the road that night and after a little while released why, the bugs were think and the windscreen was coated.
Managed to make it safely to Fitzroy Crossing where we stayed at the Lodge, great setup and after a massive day in Trev we were happy to get some rest.

The next morning we awoke to the sounds of screeching Corellas, again at an ungodly hour. The Fitzroy River was flowing and levels quiet high. Stopped by the Geikie Gorge on the way out of town, would be great to actually view this by boat but the tourist season was over and no tours available. Still managed to get a little look at things and there were a couple of barra chopping away on the other side on the river.
From here we headed towards Derby and decided to make a last minute change to the route, we headed up the Leopold Downs Road towards Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, the "must sees" in the area......must see next time is what they mean....was closed. Anyway was good training for Trev as the road was a little wet and there were a couple of creek crossings. This road connected with the Gibb River Road and then headed in to Derby.
Derby was a interesting little place, not much going on, did a little fishing from the jetty at the port (no success), watched the coppers chase a few of the locals and then headed on to Broome for the night.
