Ending another long day in Trev, we arrived in Broome and headed straight to Cable Beach Caravan Park. After quickly setting up camp we headed across to the Sunset Bar for a few sun downers and to watch the world go by (a few on camels). What a great way to end the day.
The plan was to head for Cape Leveque as soon as the road opened as it had been closed for a few days. Morning report from the council was not good so looked like we would spend the day in Broome. First plan, get Trev some new windscreen wiper blades and then get his brakes looked at. Managed to find a good mechanic (Broome Auto Excellence), can recommend these guys as they managed to get things sorted straight away whilst we headed in to town to the pub to watch the cricket and get out of the heat, should have stayed outside. We picked up Trev all fixed and looked for our next adventure in Broome, thought that it may be worth checking once more to see if the road is open......It was so off we headed to Cape Leveque. Road was not too bad and there were a couple of wet spots to start with, then the heavens opened. Like we had bought new windscreen blades for Trev, only problem was they were still behind the seat. Anyway, Cindy stayed in the seat while Tom fitted new ones in the downpour. Was needed though and the road quickly became a river of red water, needed to even get out a check the depths a few times. Trev's first serious swim was fine, managed to get up to the Cape and by this time all was fine, well not quite....
We set up camp on the headland overlooking the ocean, what a view and we had the place to ourselves, except for the bugs and mossies. Managed to get some good sunset shots and then settled down for the night, few bug issues but managed to survive...just.
The next morning we packed camp and waited for the reception to open, sh#t it gets light in this town early.
Been low tide we managed to walk the whole way around the bottom of the cape looking back up at these bright red cliffs that the area is known for.
Sorted out our bill and then just as we were leaving a series of water spouts appeared off the resort, took a few pics and hope that they would come closer to shore but after a while we gave up and headed off.
Next stop Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, we got there just as they were putting all the display stuff out so Cindy was like a kid in a candy store, good thing we didn't decide to do a runner, the keys were locked in the car.....Managed to buy something quite nice and Cindy has plans for it. After breaking in to Trev we continued up the road to One Arm Point, an aboriginal community, had a quick look around and the water was so clear but really ripping through the channel, looking at the number of boats the fishing must be good up there.
After stopping to check the BOM site for rain radar (only a couple of light showers) we headed back down towards Broome hoping the rain was not too bad. Well lets just say the BOM site is full of cr#p, the road was awash with water and was more like a river than a road.
We also had to stop at Beagle Bay Community to grab a little extra fuel, was too wet to get the jerry cans from the back. Did a little tour of the town, every house had at least 3 Toyota 4WDs out the front but most had 2 or 3 wheels, was a good eye opener for Cindy.
Trev worked very hard that day and after 2 1/2 hours of ploughing we managed to make the bitumen, he will never be the same again. The pictures tell the story........
Arriving back in Broome we decided to head to Roebuck Bay Caravan Park and secured a great campsite right on the beach for a couple of nights. From here we did the balance of the recommended tourist things, open air movie theatre, Jap cemetery, Light House, port/jetty (spotted some massive GTs around the pylons but you would never stop them) and also purchased one of WA's answer to a crab pot, does not work and should just bought one in Darwin instead....who cares if they are illegal in this state.
Managed to get some amazing sunset shots as well as nearly been blown away on the last night.....see why no one else was camped there.
Also did a quick run up to Willie Creek (Pearl Farm) and Trev managed to get a sneak at the the beach.
Planning to head to Port Headland in the morning there was only one issue, Trev was not feeling the best after his hard couple of days in the mud so managed to get him in for a quick check up at the guys from Broome Auto Excellence.....again gratefully appreciated. All good just a little top up of fluids and all ready to go......Next stop Port Headland and the Pilbara
