2011 The Journey continues- Katherine –Kununarra

A New Year is on us and we are 10,000Km into our journey. We awoke slightly dusty from our NYE celebrations. A hearty feed of Bacon, Eggs and Baked Beans along with a quick dip in the pool we headed on our way West. First stop Victoria River which was in flood but scenery was truly amazing.

Driving further into the sun we stopped at Timber Creek for some rather expensive fuel and proceeded on through the Gregory National Park which was a sea of green except for the Red Cliffs on the escarpments. Stopping for the odd photo of the Boab Tree we managed to get to Lake Argyle just after dark, not much happening and an early night was had.

The next morning we awoke to two kookaburras having an argument above us at just light - 4am in the morning. With daylight upon us the full beauty of Lake Argyle and Ord River was revealed what a massive expanse of water and also the home of one the best swimming pool views you’ll ever see.
From here we headed into Kununarra where re-stocked on supplies after having to leave all our stuff at the border –again.  Bargain of the week- two cold chooks for only $1!.  Fully stocked we headed for Gibb River Rd which sadly was closed.
Due to the wet many of the National Parks are closed and we will have to come back in the dry season.  It is still good to be able to experience the wet season albeit hot and humid. The locals appear relaxed and there is also less crowds. When the rains arrive it really is a sight, coming from every direction with heaps of lightening.  Not the greatest conditions for camping since we have 5 tarps we are fine.
We headed  north to Wyndham and the Five Rivers lookout (Durack, Forrest, King, Pentecost and the Ord all meet) We pushed on towards Hall Creek and Fitzroy Crossing driving through the beautiful Kimberley region.
